The Maser Monitoring Organisation is a collection of researchers exploring the use of time-variable maser emission in the investigation of astrophysical phenomena. The forward directed aspects of research primarily involve using maser emission as a tool to investigate star formation. Simultaneously, these activities have deepened knowledge of maser emission itself in addition to uncovering previously unknown maser transitions. Thus a feedback loop is created where both the knowledge of astrophysical phenomena and the utilised tools of investigation themselves are iteratively sharpened. The project goals are open-ended and constantly evolving, however, the reliance on radio observatory maser monitoring campaigns persists as the fundamental enabler of research activities within the group.

We are carrying out the intensity monitoring of the water maser emission associated with massive young stellar objects (YSOs) using the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) antennas. We are currently monitoring 108 sources. During our long monitoring period, we could find flares on several YSOs. As an example, we show the results from IRAS 16293–2422 and NGC2071 IRS1 here. We also show the results of monitoring of the water maser emission from G36.115+0.552, which the methanol maser flare was reported. We observed it as often as possible, usually once a day.
Critical period of weed control in an interseeded system of corn and alfalfa

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) hectares in Michigan are declining partly due to reliance on corn (Zea mays L.) silage as a continuous feed source. By interseeding corn and alfalfa, farmers can replace the low alfalfa yield in the establishment year with corn silage while simultaneously establishing alfalfa. A randomized split-block field study was conducted in East Lansing, MI, over 3 yr (2019 to 2021) to determine the critical period of weed control (CPWC) in the interseeded corn and alfalfa system using two corn hybrids with differing leaf architecture (pendulum vs. upright). Whole plots were assigned to corn hybrids interseeded with alfalfa, and subplots were assigned to a surrogate weed, Japanese millet [Echinochloa esculenta (A. Braun) H. Scholz], for the duration of competition treatments. Weed-free and weedy plots were included as controls. At the end of the interseeding year, corn was harvested, while alfalfa was harvested the following year. The CPWC is made up of two components: the critical timing of weed removal (CTWR) and the critical weed-free period (CWFP). Corn hybrid had no impact on the CTWR or CWFP for interseeded corn or alfalfa. Averaged across hybrids, the CTWR was 303 growing degree days (GDD), and CWFP was estimated to be greater than the study duration. The CTWR in the first cutting of alfalfa was estimated to be 369 GDD. The CWFP was estimated to be 394 GDD for a 5% acceptable yield loss for the first alfalfa cutting. Identification of the CPWC in the interseeded system will increase adoption and interest in other interseeded systems that can mitigate potential negative environmental and economic impacts of monoculture agriculture.

Objectives:
Disinhibited behaviors in dementia are associated with multiple negative outcomes. However, effective interventions are under-researched. This systematic review aims to provide an overview of intervention studies that report outcome measures of disinhibited behaviors in dementia.
Design:Systematic searches of the databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsychINFO, Social Work Abstracts and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trial databases were conducted for publications published between 2002 and March 2020. We included hand-searched reviews, original articles, case reports, cohort studies, and randomized controlled trials (RCTs). All studies were rated for research quality. Statistical and clinical significance were considered for individual studies. Effect sizes were included where provided or calculated where possible. Mean effect sizes were calculated for RCTs only.
Participants:The systematic review included studies involving people living with dementia.
Measurements:The Neuropsychiatric Inventory disinhibition subscale was used most often.
Results:Nine pharmacological and 21 nonpharmacological intervention studies utilized different theoretical/clinical approaches. These included pain management, antidepressants, models of care, education and/or training, music-based approaches, and physical activity. The quality of research in RCTs was strong with a greater effect size in nonpharmacological compared to pharmacological approaches (mean Cohen’s d = 0.49 and 0.27, respectively). Disinhibition was a secondary outcome in all studies.
Conclusion:Pharmacological (including pain management and antidepressants) and, more so, nonpharmacological (models of care, education/training, physical activity, and music) approaches were effective in reducing disinhibition.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate alterations in functional connectivity, white matter integrity, and cognitive abilities due to sports-related concussion (SRC) in adolescents using a prospective longitudinal design. Methods: We assessed male high school football players (ages 14–18) with (n=16) and without (n=12) SRC using complementary resting state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) along with cognitive performance using the Immediate Post-Concussive Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT). We assessed both changes at the acute phase (<7 days post-SRC) and at 21 days later, as well as, differences between athletes with SRC and age- and team-matched control athletes. Results: The results revealed rs-fMRI hyperconnectivity within posterior brain regions (e.g., precuneus and cerebellum), and hypoconnectivity in more anterior areas (e.g., inferior and middle frontal gyri) when comparing SRC group to control group acutely. Performance on the ImPACT (visual/verbal memory composites) was correlated with resting state network connectivity at both time points. DTI results revealed altered diffusion in the SRC group along a segment of the corticospinal tract and the superior longitudinal fasciculus in the acute phase of SRC. No differences between the SRC group and control group were seen at follow-up imaging. Conclusions: Acute effects of SRC are associated with both hyperconnectivity and hypoconnectivity, with disruption of white matter integrity. In addition, acute memory performance was most sensitive to these changes. After 21 days, adolescents with SRC returned to baseline performance, although chronic hyperconnectivity of these regions could place these adolescents at greater risk for secondary neuropathological changes, necessitating future follow-up. ALMA observations of submillimeter H2O and SiO lines in Orion Source I

We present observational results of the submillimeter H2O and SiO lines toward a candidate high-mass young stellar object Orion Source I using ALMA. The spatial structures of the high excitation lines at lower-state energies of >2500 K show compact structures consistent with the circumstellar disk and/or base of the northeast-southwest bipolar outflow with a 100 au scale. The highest excitation transition, the SiO (v=4) line at band 8, has the most compact structure. In contrast, lower-excitation transitions are more extended than 200 au tracing the outflow. Almost all the line show velocity gradients perpendicular to the outflow axis suggesting rotation motions of the circumstellar disk and outflow. While some of the detected lines show broad line profiles and spatially extended emission components indicative of thermal excitation, the strong H2O lines at 321 GHz, 474 GHz, and 658 GHz with brightness temperatures of >1000 K show clear signatures of maser action.

Background: Most people with dementia in Western societies will eventually be placed in a nursing home. This can be stressful to those with dementia and to their families. The adjustment to this new caring environment by both residents and their family caregivers and the factors that influence this are the focus of this review.
Methods: A literature search of Embase, Scopus, and Medline databases of articles published in English between 1990 and 2011 using specified search terms was performed to examine this transition. The 174 titles located were screened and reference lists hand searched resulting in the 49 relevant articles included in this review.
Results: This decision and the subsequent adjustment period is a difficult time for people with dementia and their family caregivers. Admission has been linked to increased behavioral symptoms and in particular depression and agitation, decreasing cognition, frailty, and falls in people with dementia. For caregivers, guilt, depression, feelings of failure, and continuing burden but also improvement in quality of life have been variously reported. Research to determine what influences the trajectory of these different outcomes and the prevalence of positive outcomes for people with dementia is lacking. Successful transitions may be assisted by ensuring that the person with dementia has input into decision making, orientation procedures for the person with dementia and family member prior to and on admission, a “buddy” system for new arrivals, and a person-centered approach.
Conclusions: Adjustment to admission to residential care can be difficult for people with dementia and their family caregivers. Longitudinal research examining factors influencing the adjustment can provide a basis for intervention trials to improve this transition.

Structural brain CT changes and cognitive deficits in elderly depressives with and without reversible dementia (‘pseudodementia’)*

Twenty-six elderly (> 60 yrs) patients with DSM-III major depression were compared to 13 patients with NINCDS/ADRDA probable Alzheimer's disease (AD), and to 31 screened normal controls. Subjects were matched on age and sex. Fifteen of the 26 depressed patients were cognitively impaired on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) upon admission, but after treatment returned to the normal range. These 15 patients were defined as having the dementia syndrome of depression (DOD). The remaining 11 depressed patients were termed depressed, cognitively normal (DCN). All subjects received standardized cranial CT scans for assessment of ventricular brain ratio (VBR) and CT attenuation numbers. Subjects also received neuropsychological evaluation.
CT values for the 26 depressed patients lay between those of AD patients and normal controls. CT values for the DOD subgroup clustered near those of AD patients. Patterns of cognitive deficits and correlations of CT attenuation values with cognitive measures were also similar in AD and DOD. Most patients were reassessed at a mean of two years after initial testing; of the 11 of the 15 DOD re-examined, only one had undergone cognitive decline. By contrast, all AD patients retested had declined significantly. Episodes of DOD and DCN tended to ‘breed true’. This study suggests that while patients with DOD may have underlying structural brain abnormalities, obvious short-term progression to AD does not commonly occur.

Characteristics of L-glutamine transport by lactating mammary tissue

The transport of L-glutamine by the lactating rat mammary gland has been investigated using rat mammary tissue explants and the in situ perfused rat mammary gland. L-glutamine uptake by both explants and the perfused mammary gland was via both Na+-dependent and Na+-independent pathways. It appeared that these pathways are situated on the blood-facing aspect of the mammary gland. L-glutamine uptake by both mammary preparations was markedly inhibited by 2-aminobicyclo[2,2,1]heptane-2-carboxylic acid in the absence of external Na+. This is consistent with L-glutamine uptake via system L. The Na+-dependent component(s) of L-glutamine uptake remains to be precisely identified. However, system A can be ruled out on the basis that L-glutamine was not inhibited by (methylamino)isobutyric acid. Mammary tissue concentrates L-glutamine with respect to both milk and plasma: we suggest that the Na+-dependent component(s) of L-glutamine uptake is responsible for generating the intracellular to extracellular concentration gradient.
